DJ Premier: Still Shinin'

New interview done by Anslem Samuel with DJ Premier, quite long, quite good, quite funny. I think Premo never was more in the media then last year and now 2009. It will be a busy year for him, again hope we will meet our wet dream this year for real. Time is flying!! This interview was prolly made in december last year.

When it comes to hip-hop architects, few are as revered as DJ Premier. As one-half of the legendary Gang Starr, the Brooklyn beatsmith (by way of Houston) has crafted classic tracks ranging from underground gems (Nas’ “N.Y. State of Mind,” the Notorious B.I.G.’s “Ten Crack Commandments”) to radio jams (Common’s “The 6th Sense,” Jeru the Damaja’s “Come Clean”) to mainstream smashes (Christina Aguilera’s “Back in the Day,” Limp Bizkit’s “N 2 Gether Now”). Through it all, Preemo maintains his true school roots. That’s most evident with his label, Year Round Records, which houses hardcore acts like the NYGz and Blaq Poet. Taking a break from his Friday night satellite radio show on Sirius XM, “Live From HeadQCourterz,” Premier breaks down the foundation for his budding label and extends open invitations to Cory Gunz and Dr. Dre to spit on his tracks.

XXLMag.com: Why did you start Year Round Records?

DJ Premier: I started to see how the labels would not open their arms to the pure hip-hop. They were just taking the sucker shit so whatever way to alleviate that and just do your own shit is very time consuming, very costly but the love of the culture for me makes me wanna stick behind this and push this label through immediately.

XXL: What was it about the NYGz that made you sign them?

Preemo: I like the way the NYGz sound, plus they lived the lifestyle of what they talk about and they’re well respected in their hood. I appreciate someone I can develop more and they’re older—they’re in their mid 30s—and I’m not concerned about the age difference. I wanna be a label that doesn’t do whatever the other labels do. We all out to win together as a team despite all the stress and what it takes to survive in this shitty ass industry.

XXL: What about Blaq Poet?

Preemo: Blaq Poet’s album we’re about to drop in February. It’s done; I’m just mixing it. We just shot the video to Poet’s single called “Ain’t Nuttin’ Changed” right in the Bridge. It’s a record showin’ he still gets love whenever he comes and sees his people. It was fun shootin’ it in the cold and we got it in, but I produced the whole album and it’s called The Blaq Print.

XXL: What should fans expect off that one?

Preemo: The album is actually a collection of songs that we just started working on in the studio and a lot of people was asking what we were gonna put out as a release. There are sick songs we have done in the past but I really like this record that we did called “Voices,” where he was hearin’ voices of Biggie and Pac and other deceased MCs—just great MCs period—talking in his head and he says it was ’cause he was drunk but he’s really telling the story of hip-hop. He does it in such an ill way where you gotta respect it, so a lot of people ask about that record.

XXL: Will this be the first official release off Year Round?

Preemo: This is the second release on my label as far as albums go. NYGz dropped Welcome to G-Dom last October and that did well for us just ’cause we were able to get them some shows in Europe. Now they’re working on their new album, Pros and Cons, and I’m producing the entire album.

XXL: What do you look for in an artist?

Preemo: Like I said, it’s very hardcore it’s very much needed right now ’cause I just like hard lyrics and hard beats. You don’t gotta be hardcore like a M.O.P. or a N.W.A, but you still gotta have some ill rhymes. Poet has the illest rhymes for a hardcore rapper that’s out right now and he makes sense. He’s a grown ass man but his lyrics can penetrate even the young ignorant muthafucka who still thinks he knows everything ’cause we’re speaking the language of the street. Everybody’s not thinking about the people that’s left behind and the people that’s on lock down, but we do it with a certain class.

XXL: Being that you’re independent and are working primarily with underground artists, what do you consider a success sales wise?

Preemo: I’m willing to start from the bottom. I don’t expect to be platinum overnight, we have that drive to win but not like, “Oh, yeah, we’re going platinum and this and that.” We just let it roll ’cause we understand that we gotta start from zero and even though I’ve had mad success in the industry, I don’t mind starting from the bottom because I’ve been there before so it’s easy to walk that road. It’s nothing I’m not familiar with and the artists have the same mentality because I could stop right now and I’m good. I’ve done my whole career and I’ve achieved pretty much everything I’ve wanted to. There’s still a lot more that I wanna achieve but if it stopped today I know I did a lot.

XXL: Is there anyone you wouldn’t work with?

Preemo: Dope is dope, but I really wouldn’t deal with a younger kid who’s like 15 because they really can’t rhyme about much that I can relate to unless he really just has some experience like when we were coming up. Other than that [I could] pump up some of the younger artists because they can hit the mainstream easier and the money comes a little quicker, but the hassle of doing something that you don’t love? I’m not gonna do it.

XXL: What about someone like Cory Gunz, who’s young but a beast on the mic?

Preemo: Yeah, I would work with him because I know his father [Peter Gunz] is showing him [the ropes]. So Cory I would definitely do a deal with… But I also have this kid Nick Javas from New Jersey. He just graduated from Rutgers and is a real witty MC. I’m really looking forward to working with him. We’re actually about to leak a song called “Opportunity Knocks.”

XXL: What’s that about?

Preemo: He told me he wanted to do a song about him trying to convince me to sign him, so it’s him coming to see me at the studio but I’m busy. He’s sayin’, “Look, I’m here; why don’t you let me get in the booth?” I told him I don’t do it like that and he’s still pushing me and I’m like aight, I’ll give you one shot so I give him one shot and he drops 16. When he asks me my opinion on the verse I respond to him with cuts. I don’t ever speak, I’m just letting the cuts say it like, one line I’m like why are you wasting my time like this? I cut that line from Fast Times at Ridgemont High so instead of me talking, the record’s talking.

XXL: What’s going on with your solo album, Man of Few Words?

Preemo: I’m thinking about starting my album [soon], but my wish list [of artists] keeps changing. I’ve changed it at least seven or eight times, but I finally found one I like and now I’m gonna stick to that. Now it’s more of a time thing. It has to be timed out right because it’s like me gathering 10 or 12 of my favorite artists. It’s a lot of pressure but I’ma make sure that it happens. Yeah, let’s just make sure we don’t end up with a bunch of delays like Dr. Dre’s Detox. [Laughs] I would love to get Dre on my album. I wish I could do a beat and he would spit to it. I don’t care who writes it for him—Dre just has a dope flow when he recites rhymes that he wrote or were written for him. He always knows how to project it right that’s why he’s a true producer. Maybe one day that will happen…That’ll be a good collaboration.

XXL: Word, any possibility for one more Gang Starr album?

Preemo: My answer is if Guru is ready, then I’m ready. It’s really up to him, he says Gang Starr is originally his creation, which I really have no problem of giving him that, but the history we made together from ’89-2004, that’s the purest part of Gang Starr history that anybody will ever remember. In order to do it right again, if he’s ever ready again, I’ll be in the lab that day with the tape burnin’.

Blaq Poet - Too Strong

Finally I have it, it's taken from the vinyl. But I'm still waiting on my copy of the single, it didn't reached Europe yet. Maybe next week, and I still don't have a message of YRR when the video will be released. Oh well, make sure you cop this one. Or at least "Tha Blaqprint" (coming in a couple of months) if you don't have a vinyl player. But then you won't have this song, because it's a vinyl only track. Just promise me you support DJ Premier in a way, how it should be:

Laura Izibor Speak on DJ Premier Remix

Here I found a little conversation with Laura Izibor on the phone talking about DJ Premier. He made a pretty damn good rnb remix last year for the Irish soul artist, the remix is released in America on Atlantic as a vinyl single so you can still cop that!

PREEMISH: Convinced - Mass Appeal 2009 (Feat. Shawn Jackson, Tunji & El Prez)

I'm posting this quick because I'm a big fan of Shawn Jackson, also he should be on a Premo beat in my mind! And because this isn't just a freestyle, but they made a new beat with the "Mass Appeal" sample. That is cool to do instead of just freestyle on a recycled beat, so I'm supporting this shit. Just a cool project, nuff said:

All Eyes On: Khaleel

If you ask one of my visitors who is Khaleel they will answer 'It's a cat that is signed to DJ Premier's label'. But who knows really Khaleel?! What's his personality, what are his legends, ... That's what I was trying to find out. So I went in contact with this young Texas living hip hop artist who is working on his debut album since last years summer. Please not that this is an oversea interview, so I did that best what I could do. You will definitely know him better, and at the end you want that album so bad haha. You can still vote on him, his debut album is titled "My MC Name Is...". Last year we didn't see much of him, but this year it will all change so watch. Starting you will see him in the "Ain't Nuttin' Changed" video of Blaq Poet (whenever that will be released lol, three weeks ago?) and ending with his debut album hopefully! Enjoy:

DJ Premier Homage

This is a special one, a track that pays homage to DJ Premier. I can't say he doesn't deserve this, because he is one true legend. I'm wondering if he would play it on LiveFromHQ, props to Phonte for the hook up who is actually also on the track together with Royce da 5'9" and Stat Quo. DJ Premier didn't produce this track, but Focus did! He did some nice productions is the past, but this one is real dope too. It's for his new serie where he is going to make more homages. Haha, a very nice effort of these guys! Now I want to see Phonte on a Premo production!! Enjoy the homage to DJ Premier, who is know for 20 years(!) in the game, started with Gang Starr in 1989, congrats:

I Think "American Black Man" is Coming

Loool, I'm almost ashamed to post this, but I think "American Black Man" is finally getting released this season. Bumpy released some days ago a new song called "Yes You Can" with the tags "American Black Man coming soon...". I really hope so! The album of the Gang Starr Foundation member will contain productions by Alchemist, Pete Rock, DJ Premier and himself. The album was first announced to be released the first quarter of 2005. Also he got an album made in three days with KRS-One that also should be released anytime, the productions are from Freddie Foxxx himself. Besides that he is also doing an album fully produced by DJ Premier with old and new joints. And he even said he was going to do a full album with Pete Rock if he could.

(This was the front of the album in 2005...)

Track with Premo that should be on it:
  • The Life
  • Mic & Gun
  • Freddie Blassey
  • My Thoughts
Some smaller news: you can pre-order House of Repz vls at ughh.com, they are also going to release an album this year called "The 5ive Facez of Death". Surprise surprise, also Natural Elements is getting ready to release an album haha (this got nothing to do with DJ Premier). For those who know them will be glad to hear this! And Royce da 5'9" "Street Hop" is coming 21/04 on M.I.C/One Records, new video "Part of Me" will drop in a couple of days.

MoSS Signed to Works of Mart

Got something fresh for y'all, a 40mins interview with DJ Premier about a lot of items. Big shout to the people of Thermal Soundwaves for this one. It's recorded in January so this headline is fresh. Works of Mart, if you read the credits, DJ Premier always produced for Works of Mart. It's a small label project of DJ Premier where he signes producers (since recently), first name is MoSS. Producer from Canada.

Other then that DJ Premier talks about Year Round Records, Mass Appeal, DWYCK, Buckshot Lefonque, Biggie, Blaq Poet and how to get in touch with his management. They also talks about Superproducer Solar because he was getting aggressive some months ago when they did an interview with Guru because there was too much talk about Gang Starr, and when I heard that interview, oeeeew, this producer threats Guru as a child (he actually interrupt Guru several times with a mad voice how the deal is) haha. I think I finally understand why Guru and Premier are not together anymore... But at least he is a superproducer (now you know my opion).

Here you have the interview with DJ Premier:

PREEMISH: Brooke Russell - No More

Long time I posted a beat with a close DJ Premier sound, this one is a rnb track by Brooke Rusell. She is a singster from USA, but used to live in Germany (or still lives there). She only made one album in 1999. With help from various german artists, like DJ Desue. If you don't know him, he used to be one of the best German hip hop producer. But this one is a more unkown production of him, but you will hear how hot it is:

Notorious Brunch with DJ Premier today

That’s right we are offically open for business tomorrow but this Saturday we’re having a “Nortorious Brunch” with free cocktails from Sprite Green and DJ Premier spinning from 1pm to 4pm. 672 N. Wells is our new address. If you live in Chicago, hey, it's free, why not...

Ain't Nuttin' Changed VLS

Blaq Poet dropped the first 12" on DJ Premier's Year Round Records, and here he drops his long-overdue second 12-inch for the label. "Ain't Nuttin' Changed" is the first single from "Tha Blaqprint", which is Premier's first front-to-back album of production since the last Gang Starr album. The album is due Spring 2009, with this slab giving you two joints from the album plus a bonus cut...

A1 Ain't Nuttin' Changed (Dirty)
A2 Ain't Nuttin' Changed (Clean)
A3 Ain't Nuttin' Changed (Instrumental)
B1 Don't Give a F*cc (Clean)
B2 Don't Give a F*cc (Dirty)
B3 Too Strong (Dirty)
B4 Too Strong (Instrumental)

Source: Fatbeats

Yeah baby, finally! We can cop this goodie, note that in the info of fatbeats are a couple mistakes like not all tracks will be produced by Premo. But this whole VLS is!! As you know "Too Strong" won't be on the album, it's a bonus for the vinyl freaks under us. I will always making adds to DJ Premier work, this is how I show my respect, I want to help them sell, every producer wants support, only the best will get it.. And finally, this is also the time the clip will drop for "Ain't Nuttin' Changed" so wait with us.. Peace from the east.

50 Cent Beat Update

No new stuff at LiveFromHQ 17/01/2009 today, but the show wasn't bad. We were all waiting on a reaction of DJ Premier considering that 50 Cent track and the first joint he played was that track. What I noticed is that the track had tags of "thisis50.com" a several times, so he didn't got the version from 50 Cent himself but from "thisis50.com" where it's also leaked. So if you are Preem, here you have the full no dj version of 50 Cent rhyming and shouting on your beat like this blog is used to, finding it first! And after the track was played he explained how the situation is, follow this:

All Eyes On: Phat Gary

Here is an interesting view on the life and thoughts of Gary Bond, also known as Phat Gary. Most know him as manager of DJ Premier since 2005, others know him as intern of Payday Records in the golden 90s. A guy with a lot of experience in the game with a mission: take Year Round Records to the next level...

"Today’s world is not about how Premier gave you Gang Starr. It’s about what he’s gonna do next week, next month, next year."

“I’m a part of a hip-hop icon, and his success. Not my success, his success. My goal is to make sure he prospers. He’s been doing this for twenty years, and still doing it, in a world where that doesn’t happen very often.”

Indeed, being responsible for the career of rap’s most revered producer —DJ Premier—is no small feat. It involves a healthy respect for the past with a keen eye toward the future. It means cherishing a legacy while retaining relevancy in today’s myopic, what-have-you-done-for-me lately music game. But manager Gary Bond, affectionately yet authoritatively known throughout music industry circles as Phat Gary, wouldn’t want it any other way. And he’s wary of quick alliances and false promises.

“It’s a family here with Premier and our team. It’s not like I’m the manager and he’s separated from me; no, we actually work together closely. I speak to other potential clients, but I can usually tell right away what they’re looking for: to make it happen today. It doesn’t work like that. You have to work and build to make an artist interesting and marketable enough that people want to spend their money on him. Some managers can manage anybody for six months, and then be onto the next cat. It’s hard to find loyalty. People don’t want to work together, fight together, and reap benefits together. Everybody got so caught up in believing that things are supposed to be given to him or her, because success is all you see on TV. They don’t show you the failures. You’d be surprised, a lot of cats don’t really want it.”

Essentially born into a cipher—he spent homeroom periods at Brooklyn’s George Westinghouse High School with Jay-Z and Oli “Power” Grant, Wu-Tang Clan’s Executive Producer—Phat Gary dipped his toe into the industry pool as an intern at Payday Records under owner Patrick Moxey. Payday, incidentally, initially inked Jay-Z to a contract, and released his debut single “In My Lifetime.” Fully immersed in the daily grind, Gary labored through 12, even 16-hour days, saturating himself with industry knowledge and wherewithal. Now, he reminisces on those early days with his trademark mix of irony and insight: “When I was an intern at Payday, people used to laugh at me, saying ‘You’re the dude here working this hard for sandwiches.’ Now, these people are calling me for help.” Last laugh indeed.

Stepping out of the office, Gary assumed the duties of road manager for luminary acts such as O.C., Jeru the Damaja, Guru, Group Home, Bahamadia, even DJ Shadow. A seasoned road vet by 1998, Gary fielded an even more esteemed and lucrative offer from Patrick Moxey: fulltime management of iconic rap duo Gang Starr, comprised of the aforementioned DJ Premier and MC Guru. Phat Gary went to work for Moxey’s affiliated management firm, Empire Management. With Gary’s day-to-day input, demand for Premier’s stripped-down, street-seeped production skyrocketed—so much so that Gary teamed up with Empire coworker Sarah Honda.

When Empire shut its doors in 2004, Gary found his services heavily in demand, and ultimately landed at upstart management company Fuerte. That stint lasted only six months, as a familiar face came calling: DJ Premier. In 2005, Phat Gary reunited with his old friend and ally, this time without interlocutor. Phat Gary was put in charge of Year Round Inc., the umbrella company for all of Premier’s endeavors: production, publishing, touring, releasing of records, etc. He also took the reins at Premier’s recording studio HeadQcouterz, wherein Gary’s office is located to this day. DJ Premier’s business was now exclusively Phat Gary’s.

Immediately, Gary looked to revise some longstanding but less-savory industry business practices: “A lot of people came to Premier looking for favors since he’s this underground producer, and I told them, ‘No, you need to do me a favor, I need you to pay like you weigh.’ So people finally starting paying Premo what he deserved. It was a big step in proving my abilities not only to Premier but also to myself. I basically took the whole Premier team on my back and I just walked and carried us through. It made us stronger. And all that work paid off with Christina Aguilera.”

Indeed, in 2006, Gary helped orchestrate DJ Premier’s most compelling recent project: production for Christina Aguilera’s soulful album Back to Basics. Premier contributed several tracks, including lead single “Ain’t No Other Man,” which went on to win a 2007 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Also in 2007, Premier unleashed the anthemic throwback remix to Kanye West’s “Classic,” featuring Nas, Rakim, and KRS-One. The team of DJ Premier and Phat Gary Bond had pushed the envelope, again. And made believers of an entirely new fanbase. Currently, Premier and Bond are knee-deep in goings-on: a remix for Maroon 5; the standout track “MVP” on Ludacris’ new Theater of the Mind album; artists Blaq Poet and NYG’z, both signed to Premier’s Year Round Records. It don’t stop. Nor does the phone. But Gary, to his credit, still brims with the hunger he showed as a Payday intern.

“Premier and I have conversations, and he’ll thank me for managing him, for taking him on. And I respond by thanking him for the opportunity. But it’s not about being appreciated because I have so much left to accomplish. I don’t use other people’s success as a notch of what a level is. Today’s world is not about how Premier gave you Gang Starr. It’s about what he’s gonna do next week, next month, next year. The whole game is changed. I never thought I’d be here long enough to watch two generations of artists get deals, come and go, and I’m still here. I’m most proud of that fact. To this day, I don’t know how close I am to the edge because I’m not looking.”

50 Cent - Shut Ur Bloodclot Mouth

HAHA, good one right here, our first track of 2009 and it looks like I'm one of the first who have this. This is the beat that Premo was talking about that 50 Cent threw away, and because everybody was talking 50 Cent isn't street and all that he made this song. So this song is a reaction to basically us, I don't know if he took the beat now official. If it's going to be on his new album or if you can take this serious. I don't think so because there ain't no scratches by DJ Premier! But the beat is straight STREET! Listen to the lyrics close hehe:

50 Cent - Shut Ur Bloodclot Mouth (Prod. by DJ Premier)

Some more Facts of Peter Rosenberg's Interview

Here are some more facts of the big interview Peter Rosenberg did with DJ Premier, the full video will come out very soon...:
  • His appetite for vinyl as a kid was so strong he used to steal records from his church; elders there referred to him as “the Martin boy” and “Chrissy Poo” (his real name is Chris Martin).
  • In the early ’90s, he and Guru from Gang Starr lived in a house on my current block in Clinton Hill in a bizarre living arrangement with saxophonist Branford Marsalis and his wife and kids.
  • He is a veritable encyclopedia of pornography and once produced a record for Heather Hunter.
  • After moving to New York in the late ’80s, he worked as a counselor at Young People’s Day Camp: “We used to go to work at 12, drunk off Ballantines—and take care of kids.” It’s OK, though: He’s run into five of his former charges and they are all now successful businessmen.
  • In an unreleased, original version of his Premier-produced hip-hop industry cautionary tale “Outta Here,” KRS-One actually called out the names of old-school rap legends he believed had “fallen off.”
  • He initially rebuffed efforts by the Notorious B.I.G., his neighbor in Clinton Hill at the time, to get him to produce a track on Ready to Die due to financial reasons before giving in and producing the classic “Unbelievable” on the cheap.

HeadQcourterz Studios

Or shall I say D&D Studios? DJ Premier started producing at D&D from the beginning of his carreer, but D&D was also the home of Main Source, Afu-Ra, Da Beatminerz, QNC, ... It was founded in 1984 by Douglas Grama and David Lotwin and is located in Manhatten, NY (320 west 37th Street). Most of you guys are already familiar with D&D Studios, so I will close it with some clips straight from D&D:

But in 2003 D&D closed and nobody was prepared to take it over except DJ Premier & Charles Roane, I remember him saying it was a risky choice because there was a lot of money involved. But he followed his heart and bought it, I also remember he held in 2003 a big sale because it needed renovation for HeadQcourterz Studios. He renamed the studio to a fallen friend of him, sad story. HeadQcourterz was a great person, I got a message from Hashim from Rise & Shine about HeadQcourterz:
I believe he started as the head of the street team for Payday records when Group Home was on the label. I didn't know him during that time, but his presence was seen all through out the tri-state. There were Group Home stickers everywhere thanks to HQ and his thorough street team. I didn't meet HQ until he was head of the street team at Rawkus. He took a liking to my former group often citing us as one of the few "real" artist at the label, letting us know that we were on course to great things. He was also very influential in helping us secure the track from Preemo. I would see Preemo in the city and bug him to do a track for YEARS. Thanks to our buzz with Rawkus, HQ and a manager who believed in us we were able to secure the track with one of my favorite producers. The recording session was in D&D and HQ was there adding his always funny and witty comments while we smoked the finest green while working with one of the finest! Headqcourtez was unfortunately found murdered in cold blood one night in the Bronx a few years ago. He will be missed!, but thanks to Preem he will be remembered! Headqcourtez was an awesome guy. Very loyal and dedicated to promoting the artist he respected. The murder is till unsolved.
If you see HeadQcourterz studios you see a very beautiful looking and modern studio, a dream for every producers. But also Premo had to start with something, this is his history:

Mid 80's
Crew: MCs in Control, Texas
Equipment: Yamaha DX7 or RX7

Late 80's
Crew: Inner Circle Posse, Texas
Equipment: Unkown, same?

1989
Crew: Gang Starr, NY
Equipment: Emu SP-12, but one year later the famous MPC.
On the first album, I didn't really do total production. All the samples were mine, but the programming was me and my engineer Shlomo because I didn't really know how to do a record. I knew how to do demos on a 4-track: Let the beat run, lay the next track, let the beat run, then do scratches on it. Then, I started to understand the structure of making a record and took it to the next level.
2005
Crew: Year Round Records, NY
Equipment: HeadQcourterz Studios

Recording hardware, DAWs:

Apple Mac G4 computer
Digidesign Pro Tools|HD system, 96 I/O, Control|24 control surface
HHB CD recorder
Panasonic SV3800 DAT Recorder

Samplers, drum machines:
Akai MPC60 sampling/sequencing drum machine, S950 sampler

Software, plug-ins:
Focusrite Red 2-, 4-, 6-band EQ plug-ins
Waves Renaissance plug-in

It brings you back to the old EQs from back in the day, where it's that old more thick, straight-to-tape sound rather than that digital, thin sound. Renaissance Vox always just really crispens up the vocals where everything blends so well.

Turntables, mixers:
Technics SL-1210MK2 turntables

Technics 1200SHEX Championship Mixer

Numark DXMPro mixer

Instruments, sound modules, controllers:
E-mu Mo'Phatt, Proteus 2 modules
Korg Triton keyboard

The sounds that I do use are the ones Pharrell and them don't.
M-Audio Oxygen8 MIDI keyboard controller

Preamps, compressors, EQs:
DigiTech VTP1 preamp/EQ
dbx 166 dual compressor/limiter/gate

Monitors:
UREI 813Cs

I gotta have those. I can track anywhere — in the bathroom, on the street — but speakers have everything to do with mixing, because you tune your mix through the speakers.
Yamaha NS10s
A word from Charles Roane:
Most sessions, Primo will be on his own to create the track. He may call me in for a time stretch or some keys. Then, for mixdown, it's 50/50 with Premier using his HD system and I'm on his Mixplus system. At the beginning of a mix, I like to start small. Get your kick, snares and vocal level on a small monitor, like an Auratone, at low volume first. If the beats are from a keyboard or drum machine, I like the Focusrite compressor plug-in.

DJ Premier Third Best Producer of 2008

...In well respected Kevin Nottingham's mind. I promise you this will be the last "Top 2008" list! Damn third, this proves that DJ Premier in this century is still hot as hell and not felt off like some of the people think. We didn't see "A Man of Few Words" or a fully produced Preem album, but still 2008 was without a doubt a busy year for premo with 27 songs (excl. "Beats That Collected Dust")! I'm glad he still get recognized, 2009 will go hard in Brooklyn!

Rank:

10. Jake One
09. Alchemist
08. 9th Wonder
07. Khrysis
06. Illmind
05. Notzz
04. Nicolay
03. DJ Premier
It’s a little unfair to have premier here, but he’s pretty much a perennial candidate on this list every year. It’s just a matter of where he will land. 2008 has been a strong year for the legend, but a quietly strong and busy year. Handling a majority of production for the Big Shug album and dealing a lot with Blaq Poet, Preemo still found time to drop bombs on us like “That White” and “Society is Brainwashed.” His joint with Kool G Rap was long overdue and “M.V.P” with Ludacris is easily the album’s standout. He reconnected with KRS One to re-up “Criminal Minded” (for that whole Smirnoff campaign) and dropped another stand out on the remarkable Reks album. The catalog keeps growing for him, as he added two more remixes to his resume (Maroon 5, Mark Ronson).
02. Statik Selektah
01. Black Milk

You can always swap names, but you can't swap the top 3 can you? No Pete Rock, no Kanye West!

DJ Premier Trackology

I didn't made a post yet for my DJ Premier Trackology so here it is, it's a page that I made long time before this blog (three years by now) where every single release by DJ Premier is listed. I can assure you it's the most accurate list in the world and it's all thanks to a buncha real Preem heads I can update and publish this. If you see what Chris produced in his life you know by then why I made this blog. Nobody can't argue that, he is a pioneer to this game! Nuff Said!

DJ Premier Speaks on Jay-Z, Nas & Lil' Wayne

Unbelievable Remix Live '94

Some rare footage of Biggie preforming the Unbelievable Remix live with Puffy (yes, that bastard) in '94. The beat is produced by KRS-One originally for Mad Lion. This is a treasure!

House of Repz Video

I've uploaded the dirty version here...

Vinyl coming soon...

Most Anticipated Album; VOTE!!

New year, new vote. This vote will stay 100 days online and question you what the most anticipated album is for you that need to put out today. I only gave the name of the artists because the album names couldn't fit on the page. With every artists there comes an album behind that was mentioned by DJ Premier once or more. Every artist is signed to Year Round Records or connected with it and should have an album out with mostly Premo produced songs. The albums that are missing are the Nas collabo because offcourse most people want that but ain't going to happen because Nas was feeling "Nigger" needed to be released first. The "Amerikkkan Black Man" album by Bumpy Knuckles because the songs on that album by DJ Premier are mostly already leaked. And the real answer on the most anticipated album on Year Round Records is "A Man Of Few Words" no doubt, so that will be also excluded because Preem will only work on it when the time is right and the reason why he isn't talking about it anymore is because he want that journalists stop asking for it I think, so lets not push him with a pole lol. It will come out in 2011. Now for the people who don't know, lets get a little closer to the albums:

Rave Roulette "Untitled"
This is the most forgotten one. He is an artists from Brooklyn and one of NYGz homeboys. Also known as Rave, he is featured on NYGz pretape "Welcome To G-Dom" 6 times. He is currently unsigned and that's why an album of him in the early future is most unbelievable. Only one time I heard he was going to do an album and that was in 2003, since then nothing was mentioned again. The rumour is that he's in jail.

NYGz "Pros N Cons"
Ooow yeah, this is actually the first group on Year Round Records that had a full tape. Well, it was a pretape but still. With help from Traffic Entertainment Group they got lifted late 2007 and now getting ready for their real album. A fully lenght LP with songs on it nothing else produced then by DJ Premier! I know people are really waiting on this one, because DJ Premier is talking about it every 6 months I guess, it was going to be released in 2003/2004 but now it's set to release in 2009. I say late 2009/2010. The good news is we have already a leaked song of the album, called "Policy" and we also got some tracktitles and featured artists. They were even trying to get Rise Against Machine on it!

Khaleel "My MC Name Is..."
Yes, that's the title of the album some time ago. It could be changed by now, but their is a reason why we think the album could be released this year. He is actually released from prison some months ago and recorded tracks with DJ Premier! We first heard of him in 2004/2005 with a DJ Premier produced track that was called "You Can't Tell Me Shit", now the track title is "Hot Flames" and will be the first single of his upcoming debut album. Also on Year Round Records, he is unique because he's from Texas and DJ Premier is also from Texas like we all know. Also this LP will be fully produced by DJ Premier and is set to release this summer!

Nick Javas "Destination Unknown"
Another unique artist! He is the first white dude signed on Year Round Records. Till this day we didn't heard any solo track of him with DJ Premier, only a promo freestyle for LiveFromHQ. Went late in the game with DJ Premier. I think 2006. He is featured on one track of DJ Premier, but is named more then once. He also did studio sessions with DJ Premier for his debut album. Also this LP is set to release this year. Coming from New Jersey with style!

Boy Big "Untitled"
Just like Rave this album is only mentioned once in 2003 after he was featured on the Gang Starr LP "The Ownerz". Last we heard of him was in 2006 on the DJ Premier produced track "Proper Dosage" by F.A.B.I.D. So we heard him two times on Preem tracks. The rumour is that he is in prison. This is the only RnB album in the list. He is from Kansas City.

Teflon "Contraband"
Maaaaan, Teflon people, Teflon!! It's been so long time ago that we almost don't remember how nice he sounded on a DJ Premier banger! First solo appearance with DJ Premier in 1999 with the 12inch single F-U, then 7 years later released another single with DJ Premier named "Showtime" and in that same year three leaked songs for "Contraband". How does he managed not to release this album?! Don't expect this to be dropped soon...

F.A.B.I.D. "Smash City"
Mike Rone and H. Stax are F.A.B.I.D. Released a single in 2006 and a mixtape with PF Cuttin'. After the single in 2006 they were getting ready to release their debut album that we never saw, knowing their are unreleased DJ Premier records on this world. H. Stax most known from his featuring on Gang Starr single "Same Team, No Games" is known for his hardcore rhymes that would make this group a succes. This is my vote!

Blaq Poet "The Best That Never Dun It"
Blaq Poet... my favourite artist on Year Round Records, one of the best in Hip Hop today! Killed many people in his rhymes before and just like NYGz getting ready now to release his first pretape called "Tha Blaqprint" that will be released 75% sure in february 2009! But when his first real solo album will drop isn't known yet. They speak of the album since 2006 when the pretape "Rewind: Deja Screw" was released, back then the pretape for "The Best That Never Dun It". So you know they like to drop pretapes, don't bother me, as long they drop beats, not bombs (haha Dann). Blaq Poet counts now 7 leaked songs that didn't been released yet, but in a week the first single for his pretape will be released. Expect this album in 2010 maybe.

Enough writing! Sorry if I say it again, but the reason I really do this is because of the positve comments I get of you guys. It really gives me energy to write things down. And some people should know I'm from Belgium where people speak Dutch, so sorry for the spelling mistakes. As long as you understand the message it's good, if not, go outside and play. I know this isn't the best vote, if you can choose between Rave Roulette that isn't known at all or Blaq Poet that just rips a premo track one month ago so any requests for a better vote are ok. Big up to Year Round Records, Gordon Franklin and DJ Premier. Thanks for voting!

And the winnar is with a total of more then it double of the runner up -no shit-:

"Grey Hairs" was far one of the best -how do i say this- slept on albums of this year, Statik Selektah has proven in 2008 that he is a stayer on production level. He really putting it down like hell! "Say Goodnight" is using again a soundtrack as sample, it's from a French movie. DJ Premier and Reks are a perfect collabo, Reks is H-A-R-D. He won with 30%.

The Rank:

1. Reks - Say Goodnight (111, 30%)
